Our History

Capital Squares traces its roots back to October 1, 1994, when two well-loved square dance clubs — the Sir Walter Squares and the Rhamkatte Wheel-A-Rounds — merged to form a brand-new club for dancers in the Raleigh area. The new club launched with 59 enthusiastic charter members and Max Arnold as its first club caller.

In January 1995, following Max Arnold’s relocation, Greg Jones was selected as club caller and continued to lead the club for many years. In June 2005, line dancing was added to the club’s offerings, providing even more opportunities for dancers, until it was retired in 2019.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, longtime caller Greg Jones retired, and Capital Squares welcomed a variety of talented area callers to lead both dances and lessons. During this time, the club innovated by holding dances and lessons simultaneously in two adjacent halls on the same night, offering more flexibility and options for dancers of all levels.

In September 2024, Capital Squares expanded its programs by launching entry-level lessons and Social Square Dancing (SSD) workshops on Tuesday nights, along with PLUS lessons and Dance by Definition (DBD) workshops on Monday nights, all offered year-round. The club also introduced a new series of square and round dances, held on most 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturday nights from September through May. These dances feature a rotating lineup of lively, talented callers, ensuring each evening is fresh, fun, and welcoming for all dancers.

Today, Capital Squares remains a welcoming, active, and inclusive community for dancers of all skill levels, upholding a rich tradition while embracing new opportunities to keep the spirit of square dancing alive in the Triangle.
